Day 2: Salem to Blekede (48 miles)
We started off from our campsite in Salem a little later than planned since we didn't wake up until almost 9 am. A beautiful hot day without a cloud in the sky again. We had a breakfast of a peppers, mushroom, and cheese omelet with coffee! What a luxury. We spent most of the day cycling through a biosphere preserve, through wooded forests and farms. We have started seeing huge storks and tiny birds that flit in front of you for miles. A lot of our trail was next to the Elbe river. Some where along the way someone from the EU built a huge wooden tower to lookout over the river and nature area... So we climbed it... All 84 steps up and down. Yup! It was really hot but we felt strong. We hit our first hill and our first headwind so we had to push pretty hard towards the end of the day. But we made it to Blekede, a small town based on tourism in what was West Germany. We took a small ferry over the River Elbe to get there. We found a bike shop and asked if there was a "bike and bett(bed)" guest house. The owner directed us right through town to one that was perfect. We stayed in a beautiful little place called the Rosenhaus, a house from the 1800s surrounded by roses. We had a big bed and a HUGE tub. So we washed and rested before going out for dinner. We chose the local brauhaus (brewpub) with a Biergarten... Of course... We sat at the end of a table with three Germans who turned out to speak English! Christian, Lars, and Ute were wonderful dinner companions. They are hard into heavy metal and had great senses of humor. We ended up spending most of the night after dinner drinking beers and meeting all of their friends. More friends joined as the night went on; Michael, Freddy, Roxanne and others...We listened to some local live music and Andrea even got up and sang with them... Some Johnny Cash song. The whole table thought she had a great voice and kept trying to get her to sing another. We went home smiling and laughing at about 11oclock. What a day! Great food, great people, excellent beer and a cool clean room to sleep in!
