Day 23: Tourists in Vienna
Friday July 19 - Day 23 - Rest Day - Total 875miles
The day started off with breakfast at the Hilton! We went to the subway and got tickets for the day.
We walked around the "Ring" of Vienna and admired the architecture. But it was hot, hot, hot! Although not as hot as it is back home from what we are hearing. So we tried to take the local tram, but about 100 yards from where we started one of the trams broke down and created a back up. Back on foot then, we wandered to find a cool place to sit and relax. We took a break at a cafe to have an Eiskaffee. Good people watching and writing of postcards at a Vienna Cafe. We felt bad for the poor horses on carriage rides. They were really having a tough time with the heat. Something we have noticed about Vienna is that the people seem a bit brusk - they probably deal with too many tourists but their attitude is a little off, which makes for a less exciting experience. But again, it is all in who you meet and when you meet them. We tried to find a post office without success to send our postcards so we went back to the hotel and went swimming to cool off. The pool was definitely cool, although compared to Lake Constance and Alpine rivers... not quite as cold as we would have previously thought.
After a nap (it is a rest day you know), we went back out to the free summer film festival in front of the Rathaus. They have a huge screen with bleachers erected and a different film every night all summer long. We bought dinner and beers and this evening the film was a concert of Beethoven and Mozart. Little dry. We would have preferred a ballet or one of the things coming up on other nights....but it was a great venue.
The funniest part of the night was the excellent people watching - huge variety of attire. We very much enjoyed watching the steward in the amphitheater where we were sitting. He delighted in evicting people who were eating and drinking in our section, which of course was not allowed and there were posters and folding boards showing that food, drink, and smoking was prohibited. When we were done with opera singing and symphonies, we wandered around Vienna taking in the nightlife scene. The city is very pretty by night. We had gelato at an ice cream and train station hub. Then back to hotel. But subway broke down on the U1 line so we had to walk to the nearest station on the U2 line. Stuff keeps breaking down! But is was a very nice and romantic evening.
Now off and into bed. We need to be ready to head towards Budapest - about 4 days away.
